HOSPITAL AFFILIATIONS

All Harbor-UCLA Faculty Practice Plan (FPP) physician sub-specialists hold teaching and clinical appointments at the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, a leading teaching and research facility and regional trauma center. In their capacities as faculty physicians at the Medical Center, our doctors divide their time between training Interns, Residents and Clinical Fellows, direct patient care and actively participating in clinical research in their respective fields.

In addition to their primary involvement on staff at the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, many of our doctors also hold medical staff appointments at leading community hospitals. Our Physician Directory listings indicate the hospital appointments held by our various FPP faculty sub-specialists.

Sub-specialists within our Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology’s Division of Maternal and Fetal Medicine, which specializes in high-risk pregnancy management, are particularly committed extending their services to strategically located community hospitals throughout the Southland. In addition to Harbor-UCLA, these doctors hold privileges at Torrance Memorial, Memorial of Gardena, Daniel Freeman, St. Joseph’s – Burbank, Holy Cross, and Desert Hospital in Palm Springs.

When a privately insured or self-pay patient being treated by a FPP faculty sub-specialist requires inpatient care, the decision as to where to hospitalize the patient hinges on a number of factors. These include the specialized hospital based capabilities required to treat the patient’s condition, together with the hospital network utilized by the patient’s health plan. In situations where the patient’s condition warrants the highly specialized capabilities of a major teaching hospital, FPP can facilitate negotiations between the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center and the patient’s health plan covering a mutually acceptable per diem structure.

Faculty Referral Center:

The Faculty Referral Center (FRC) is a special unit of the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center reserved for patients admitted by FPP faculty sub-specialists practicing in the Harbor-UCLA Professional Building. The FRC is a 16-bed unit located on the remodeled sixth floor of the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, which maintains 7 semi-private suites. Each room is attractively decorated and features all of the amenities customarily found in a private hospital setting -- including bedside telephones, television and comfortable visitor seating. As a convenience to patients and their families, admissions to the FRC are processed by the Patient Coordinator’s Office, located on the unit.
