Women’s Health Concerns:

 Breast Imaging Center: Our Breast Imaging Center in the Harbor-UCLA Professional Building offers premier mammography/breast cancer screening and diagnostic services, including the first mammography program in the South Bay to be fully accredited by the American College of Radiology. Services are directed by Iraj Khalkhali, M.D., who has pioneered development of prone scintimammography for diagnosis of breast cancer in patients whose initial mammograms and/or physical examinations have revealed suspicious lesions. Due to the procedure’s high level of sensitivity, scintimammographic studies are extremely cost-effective, reducing the need for breast biopsies. Increasingly, our Breast Imaging Center is serving as a referral center for patients seeking second opinions. High-Risk Pregnancy Management: Our Division of Maternal and Fetal Medicine, headed up by Marie Beall, M.D., offers consultation and co-management services for high-risk pregnancies, together with fetal diagnosis and treatment. These programs are headed up by Marie Beall, M.D., Division Chief, and Michael Ross, M.D., Chair, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Our Perinatology faculty possess highly developed expertise focusing on the full range of pregnancy complications, including diabetes, hypertension, Rh sensitization, autoimmune disorders and risk of preterm delivery. We offer the full spectrum of high-risk pregnancy consultation and evaluation services, including amniocentesis, diagnostic ultrasound examinations, prenatal diagnosis and genetic counseling and risk assessment. Services are currently provided at a number of sites throughout the Southland, including the greater South Bay area, Inglewood, Burbank, Pasadena and Palm Springs.

Gynecology Oncology:

 Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Floor Surgery:  Narender Bhatia, M.D., specializing in Urogynecology, offers diagnosis and treatment services and second opinion consultations covering the full range of female urological problems. His special expertise in this area embraces treatment of urinary incontinence, voiding dysfunctions, pelvic floor prolapse, reconstructive procedures and access to state-of-the-art techniques in diagnosis and management of female pelvic floor dysfunctions.

Women’s Health:   This section is led by Anita Nelson, M.D., a clinician and research authority specializing in General Gynecology and Family Planning/Contraceptive Services. As a researcher, Dr. Nelson is a leading pioneer in current developments relating to contraceptive technology. She also participates in the Women’s Health Initiative, an NIH-funded research and demonstration project focusing on women’s health issues conducted under auspices of the Harbor-UCLA Research and Education Institute.
