Respiratory Problems

Cardio-Pulmonary Exercise Testing: Using a non-invasive test (measurement of changes in air coming out of the lungs), the function of heart, lungs, circulation and muscles can be tested simultaneously during rest and exercise. This provides the most complete and detailed analysis of shortness of breath (dyspnea), exercise limitation, response to medical therapy and exercise training. The test can be completed in as little as 20 minutes. Patients receive a copy of test results, with a detailed report forwarded to their primary physician. Patients also receive an exercise prescription based on test results, providing guidance for structuring a future exercise program. This evaluation is used by patients experiencing cardio-pulmonary problems, by persons who desire to improve their current level of fitness, and by high performance athletes who want to measure their maximum oxygen uptake (VO2 max ml/min/kg). Shortness of Breath (Dyspnea) Evaluation Clinic:  Dyspnea is the sensation of shortness of breath, either at rest or during exercise. Everyone experiences dyspnea at very high levels of exercise. However, patients with heart, lung, circulation or muscle disorders experience dyspnea upon exertion of minimal effort, or even at rest. The Dyspnea Evaluation Clinic at Harbor-UCLA specializes in identifying the causes of dyspnea, and recommending therapeutic regimens designed to reduce dyspnea and improve exercise tolerance.
