Nuclear Medicine:
Division of Nuclear Medicine: Our Division of Nuclear Medicine, headed up by Frederick Mishkin, M.D., specializes in brain imaging studies of cerebralvascular blood flow, cardiac imaging and highly definitive breast imaging. The Division is a leading research and clinical center in these highly specialized areas, drawing patients from throughout the entire West Coast. For further information call (310) 222-5163.
Scintimammagraphy Breast Imaging Procedure: Iraj Khalkhali, M.D., Chief of the Breast Imaging Section at Harbor-UCLA, has pioneered the scintimammography breast imaging procedure, which holds promise as a highly reliable detector of breast cancer. The technique involves venous injection of a radioactive tracer called Cardiolite, which migrates to cancerous lumps in the breast. Through this highly definitive and painless procedure, it is possible to rule out the presence of cancer in many cases where abnormalities are detected in the initial screening mammogram -- thus reducing the need for surgical biopsies.
